The Gentrification of Ash Trevino

Everyday I am reminded that Latinos and anglo white people have a huge gap in social culture. I think that’s why it gives me a physical reaction to hear an anglo youtuber call, infamous tiktoker, Ash Trevino a roach or a gremlin. Is she exhibiting gremlin behavior? Absolutely! Do not be mistaken, this is not a piece advocating for the tiktoker, but to advise anglo creators to re-examine their motivations behind why they go so hard for talking down to a marginalized person, no matter how gross she may be. 

When I was first introduced to Ash, admittedly, I was in it for the gossip and messy hispanic tiktok drama - I’m not perfect!  I learned about her from a latina youtuber, Salem Tovar, who was able to give some version of expertise or analysis on Ash, based on her own experience growing up in latine spaces. I knew I wouldn’t get the full context of who Ash Trevino is (or is online) from a non latino creator, because WE know what kind of person Ash is, we all have a tia just like her and some of us are a tia like her, but we know ash. So I learned who she was and….I was obviously disgusted. But I now was able to laugh at all the parodies done about her from Latinx creators, because folks were calling her out for her behavior and honestly most of it is well deserved. Ash was recently on the Camilla Araujo podcast and Camilla was ruthless in how interacted with the tiktoker, in the name of advocating for Trevino’s two daughters - but all in a funny tone. But then Ash started becoming bigger and bigger and suddenly…white people gentrified the ash trevino conversation.

Truth of the matter is, as public facing as trevino is, she is really not white people’s business. Commenting on her despicable behavior, how she’s abused her children, how she’s a predator - that’s acceptable, welcomed even.  But of course, in anglo fashion, things are taken it way too far. I don’t want to plug anyone specific but it’s very easy to find on your own, but white Content creators who make skits of her are now performing in brown face and over exaggerating her non white features with make up. I lost it when some white tiktoker gave Ash a fucking accent that she does not even have. To give you an idea of why that would upset me: Latino creators and consumers on tiktok clown on Ash for being a “no sabo kid” and who speaks terrible spanish, even call her a white girl….

So why the fuck would anglo creators give her a broken English “Spanish” accent?

Where is this accent coming from? Why are they inclined to give her one when mocking Ash for views? Ash Trevino is not for Anglo white people to mock, criticize, satirize or parody because no matter what they say, it will always come across as racist or at the very least, racial in a dangerous way. (this is for white latinos making the same kind of content too, but that’s an extension of this conversation for another day. )

So - I’m sorry (not really) for spoiling all the fun for anglos, and I’m not saying Ash Trevino belongs to us, but she sure as hell does not belong to them. Stop supporting white creators who make minstrel content of Ash Trevino.
